Polish watchmaker Antoni Norbert Patek started making pocket watches in 1839 in Geneva, along with his fellow Polish migrant Franciszek Czapek. They separated in 1844, and in 1845 Patek joined with the French watchmaker Adrien Philippe, inventor of the key-less winding mechanism. In 1851, Patek Philippe & Co. was founded.
The company, like other Swiss manufacturers, produces mostly mechanical movements of the automatic and manual wind variety, but has produced quartz watches in the past and even a digital wrist watch. Patek Philippe watches have enjoyed great demand among discerning collectors and watch connoisseurs of a high social status and wealth.
It is a relentless attention to detail that sets Patek apart from other watchmakers. The firm designs and produces almost all of its watch parts and decorates and hand-assembles each watch, some 25,000 per year. All of this is done under one roof in Plan-les-Ouates. Consistent with its reputation for precision, Patek Philippe keeps meticulous records, cataloging every watch it makes.
