Wednesday Hump Day Fun Fact # 33

Before medical science discovered how the circulatory system functioned, people believed that a vein ran directly from the third finger on the left hand (commonly referred to as the “ring finger”) to the heart. Because of this perceived connection, they chose the descriptive name vena amoris, Latin for “the vein of love,” for this particular vein. The placement of the wedding ring on this finger was adopted to symbolically declare eternal love for one’s spouse due to the direct link from that finger’s vein to the heart.
